English Language Teaching Certificate

The English Language Teaching Certificate program in the College of Education and Human Development provides students with the skills to teach English to adult learners, international students and English language learners abroad. This program is ideal for those who want to develop a solid foundation for teaching English to non-native speakers. Through virtual reality technology, students gain unique immersive teacher training experiences. The program prepares students for the Teaching Knowledge Test designed by Cambridge Assessment English and can serve as a critical pathway to the Teaching English to Speakers of English in Other Languages MSEd.

Curriculum

You must complete 12 credit hours (four courses) in order to earn this certificate. Topics covered in the curriculum include

  • English phonology, 
  • key principles of language teaching, and
  • standards of curriculum design.

Delivery Method 

Courses can be completed online or in a hybrid format with two courses online and two courses in-person on Temple’s Main Campus in Philadelphia. You can enroll part- or full-time and have up to two years to complete the certificate program.

In keeping with Temple’s commitment to access and affordability, this Graduate Certificate offers a competitive level of tuition with multiple opportunities for financial support.

Tuition rates are set annually by the university and are affected by multiple factors, including program degree level (undergraduate or graduate), course load (full- or part-time), in-state or out-of-state residency, and more. These tuition costs apply to the 2024–2025 academic year.

Pennsylvania resident: $1,105.00 per credit
Out-of-state: $1,518.00 per credit
